About

In my research over the last 3 years I have investigated the outcomes for young children of participation within a Forest School pedagogy and context. Three of my research papers can be downloaded under the 'Papers' tab on the left hand side of this webpage and in summary explore:

-  A work based action enquiry employing a case study method to explore if Forest School can put into practice the UK Early Years Foundation Stage Themes and Principles through use of Leuven well being and involvement scales triangulated with observational evidence. The Leuven scales are internationally recognised indicators of the efficacy of a pedagogy and context to support child development and learning.

-  A work based action enquiry critically exploring the role of the learning disposition ‘resilience’ in relation to the learning and development of young children within a Forest School context and the implications for practice and policy. This enquiry is contextualised through child observations and reflection on practice during a 12 week Forest School project in 2010.  Applying a ‘Possible Lines of Direction’ curriculum planning model, 5 key features of ‘learning architecture’ which support the development of ‘resilience’ in young children in this Forest School context were identified.

-  A critical review analysing current research and literature exploring the relationship of the child with the natural world.  Tracing an evolutionary and historical context and an exploration of relevant child development theory, this review explores how this relationship has changed in Western industrialised culture and the contemporary tension experienced for young western children between their biological drives and their socio political context.

- My current area of enquiry is an exploration of the outcomes of the Forest School pedagogy for young children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder needs.

I work freelance delivering Forest School and practitioner training and I run the Wildways project for South Gloucestershire Council. I serve on the steering group of the Institute for Outdoor Learning Forest School Special Interest Group and I am actively involved in Forest Education and Ecopsychology networks locally and nationally.
