My PhD work broadly looks at how the British Empire reacted (and conspired) to the destruction of the Ottoman Empire and the emergence of ‘Modern Turkey’ in its place. The first of two main points of interest would be the institutional, British reaction to what is perceived as the inculcation of Western political ideals into an “ancient Eastern” and Islamic Empire. Secondly; the direct involvement of the British in Ottoman border disputes, and ethno-religious population shifts.
